On the 28th of April, a first trip took place for a shore monitoring project with the primary school in Kvívík, the Faroe Islands. This trip is organized in partnership between YAN and our Faroese partner, Føroya Náttúru- og Umhvørvisfelag (FNU). The idea is to study the beach and the different species of seaweed that are found there, and to discover the animals that live on the shore. They are doing the same activity at different times of the year to see how the shore changes with seasons (different types of animals, changes in seaweed growth, etc).
The students also got to meet Luisa Düsedau from the FACE-IT project on Arctic biodiversity and livelihoods. Luisa is a PhD student at the Alfred Wegener Institute and the Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. Her goal is to assess macroalgal biodiversity in the European Arctic and to study the impacts of climate change on Arctic benthic vegetation. The students learned from her about the importance of macroalgae for Arctic ecosystems, and about her exciting research.
